ABOUT THE SHOW

With its stunning coastline, rugged canyons, fabulous restaurants and eclectic stores, Malibu has no shortage of attractions. Now there's one more: the 2005 Malibu Summer Sculpture Exhibition. From Friday, July 1, through Wednesday, August 31, 24 sculptures, created by seven accomplished artists, will be on display in three different locations.

Mazzo di Fiori, Ken Bortolazzo
"Malibu has such a vibrant community and obvious natural beauty — it's the perfect setting to show the marriage of art and nature," says curator Carl Schlosberg, a Los Angeles dealer known for displaying art in unusual locations. "Malibu is really the ultimate gallery."

The sculptures will be exhibited where people work, live, visit, shop, commute and play. "The idea is to enrich the minds and boost the spirits of those who come in contact with them," Schlosberg says. "Art has more meaning when you experience it in your daily life."

The works range from the whimsical to the powerful to the graceful and soothing. A 15-foot steel knife, fork and spoon will greet visitors to the popular park at the Cross Creek Shopping Center. An awesome turned and twisted heavy-gauge steel sculpture dominates an open field, while several several stainless-steel kinetic forms move gently with the breeze in the Malibu Racquet Club's garden.

The 24 sculptures will be concentrated in three locations. Click here for directions. Schlosberg says he is grateful to the properties' owners — the Malibu Racquet club, the Malibu Bay Company and Koss Realty — for their cooperation in making this exhibition possible. He hopes that the art works will bring joy to the community this summer. "I've always been in love with sculpture and with Malibu," Schlosberg says, "so I'm thrilled for this opportunity to bring the two together."
